Ethereum Classic was created to try and keep the Ethereum blockchain unchanged. It was an attempt by the section of the community that stood against the hard fork and the return of the DAO funds. Ethereum Classic began trading on Poloniex and is gaining traction.
Ethereum Classic’s mission is to act as a decentralized, permissionless blockchain that acts against censorship. It promotes Ethereum’s original vision of a computer run by the world that can’t be switched off, hosting unalterable smart contracts. Ethereum Classic’s proponents think that system forks should only happen when necessary, such as when fixing platform bugs, and not to help failed contracts and support special interests.
In 2017, the Die Hard fork was applied to Ethereum Classic, which removed the Ethereum difficulty bomb. There are no plans at present to shift to PoS, but developers at the IOHK institute are working on a new PoS protocol for Ethereum Classic.
